Why I Can’t Get Enough of Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon

The first time I visited Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon I was just 18 years old (so in the late 90s!). I went with my mom for a drum workshop and retreat, and I fell in love with this magical place in the middle of the Cascade Range.

From the quaint cabins to the rustic soaking pools to the meandering river and meadows, I was hooked.

Since that first time in Breitenbush Hot Springs, I’ve continued to go back year after year, even after a devastating wildfire in 2023 destroyed many buildings and hiking trails.

Despite that, Breitenbush continues to grow and thrive, and I look forward to every visit to this clothing-optional hot springs destination.

Curious? In this post, I’ll tell you everything there is to know about Breitenbush and what to expect, even if this is your first time at a clothing-optional hot springs resort.

*Note: Breitenbush provided all the photos I am using in this post, as guests are not supposed to take photos in the hot springs area as some people are nude. Therefore, I do not have any personal photos of this resort.

What’s It Like at Breitenbush Hot Springs?

You will find Breitenbush Hot Springs in the mountains of central Oregon near the small town of Detroit. The 154-acre resort sits along the Breitenbush River and is surrounded by the Willamette National Forest, creating a forest and river setting that feels remote and quiet. The trip to get here is meandering and scenic, cutting through thick groves of trees and meadows.

Breitenbush Hot Springs has a hippie/rustic vibe with a stunning main lodge with a restaurant, bathrooms, rooms for rent, and a large shared space for yoga, meditations, drum circles and other programs. This main lodge is also where Breitenbush serves the three vegetarian meals per day that come with your reservation.

There’s also a spattering of cabins, buildings for workshops, bathhouses and two main areas with hot springs. You’ll also find personal soaking tubs and a rustic, natural steam rooms, once of my favorite spots at this resort.

Why I Love the Two Hot Springs Areas at Breitenbush

The warm mineral waters that Breitenbush uses to heat all its pools come from ancient volcanic activity and glaciers. There are two main soaking areas, both of which are clothing optional.

The Spiral Tubs

These tubs are located below the main lodge, and consist of four tubs that vary in temperature from 100-110 degrees. There’s also a wooden tub you can use as a cold plunge to complete the circuit. There’s a central bench and changing area where you can put your shoes and clothes, and hang your towel and/or robe.

These are stone pools that mimic a typical sunken hot tub you might find at a house.

The Meadow Pools

The meadow pools are more rustic, lined with rocks and trees. You’ll find three pools here with changing areas and showers nearby. One of these pools is a “silent” pool for contemplative soaking, and it overlooks the meadow and rushing river below. I love sitting in this pool at night with a spattering of stars overhead.

Where to Stay at Breitenbush Hot Springs

I’ve typically enjoyed camping in my Sprinter van at Breitenbush Hot Springs, but there are plenty of other ways to stay, too.

There are cabins, yurts and rooms in the lodge, all with varying price points and amenities. For a closer look at the styles and what they include, check out the accommodations at Breitenbush Hot Springs.

Meals are Included at Breitenbush

While the prices for an overnight stay might seem hefty at Breitenbush, you’ll also have to remember that you’ll get three meals per day. These are vegetarian meals served buffet-style. You’ll hear a gong sound when it’s time to eat. Get there early to avoid waiting in a long line of hungry people!

Keep in mind that there is NO COFFEE served at this hot springs retreat. However, there is hot water. All you have to do is bring a Melitta filter set or a French Press and make your own coffee. Breitenbush usually serves tea and juice as options.

We think the food here is exceptional and very healthy. It’s one of the main reasons I love this resort so much.

Besides soaking in the mineral springs and visiting the steam sauna, there are plenty of other thing to do at this forest retreat, too.

You can enjoy hiking, walking a stone labyrinth, sitting by the river in quiet contemplation, attending a daily well-being class, or enjoying the fire pit when weather permits.

Sometimes, concerts are offered at Breitenbush, and you’ll be lucky if you’re there on a day with music.

Etiquette at Breitenbush

When using the hot springs, you should follow some basic rules and etiquette. Bathing suits are optional in the soaking pools, but respectful behavior is expected at all times. Always shower before entering the water to help keep it clean for everyone.

Quiet conversation is encouraged, and loud noises are discouraged. Many guests use this time for meditation or deep relaxation.

Please remember to refrain from taking any photos when near any of the hot springs. Since this is a clothing-optional retreat, respecting people’s privacy is important.

Breitenbush Hot Springs is a space for both digital detox and substance detox. There’s no internet provided, nor are alcohol and drugs allowed.

Day use visitors can enjoy the pools from 9 am to 6 pm with a paid pass, which gives you access to all the main amenities. You can read more about these rules and hours at the official Breitenbush Hot Springs site. Please be mindful of staff guidance and posted signs to help everyone have a pleasant visit.

Planning Your Visit

A smooth trip to Breitenbush Hot Springs means bringing the right gear and arriving at the best time. With a bit of preparation, you can make your day relaxing and worry-free.

Packing Tips and Essentials

Pack clothes that are easy to change and comfortable for all kinds of weather. The area is off-grid, so bring a flashlight or headlamp for dark paths. Swimsuits are optional in the soaking areas, but you may want one for personal comfort. Don’t forget sandals for walking between hot springs.

A reusable water bottle is a must because it is important to stay hydrated while soaking. Pack a towel, since towel service is not always provided. You may want to bring your own snacks or a packed lunch, as meal service may not be offered to day guests. We also like bringing our own coffee and pour-over equipment.

If you plan to stay overnight, pack extra warm layers, especially in cooler months. Cell service is spotty, so you might want a printout of your reservation and driving directions. For a full list of what to expect and what you should know, visit the Breitenbush policy page.

I Hope You Enjoy Breitenbush as Much as I Do!

Breitenbush is one of my favorite hot springs I’ve ever visited. It’s clean, therapeutic, beautiful, and relaxing. I also love the food and the environment in the middle of an Oregon forest.

Breitenbush Hot Springs continues to grow and rebuild after devastating wildfires burned down many structures, and you’ll continue to see it evolve and change over time.

I can’t wait to go back!
